History Crush of the Day: Arthur Rimbaud
Arthur Rimaud was fine as hell and is one of my top history crushes of all time. He was a glorious French poet and I’ve been listening to people read his poems in the original text all evening and like, French is a seductive language already but damn. And he started writing poetry at age 15 and was so great that Victor Hugo described him as an “infant Shakespeare”, but he stopped writing poetry when he was like 20 or something. He was described as having, and I quote, “eyes of pale blue irradiated with dark blue—the loveliest eyes I’ve ever seen” and I don’t know who said that quote, but they clearly had great taste. When he was 16 Arthur started acting out, like by drinking a lot and stealing shit, so I have this image of him as an angsty French poet with the prettiest blue eyes you could ever imagine, and that is an image I will cherish forever.
